One More Hug – Free Crochet Blanket pattern

Sometimes, a hand-made blanket says what words can’t. And this free crochet blanket pattern is perfect for doing just that!
The One More Hug Blanket was designed for those moments when you want to wrap someone up in love—whether they’re across the room or across the country. It’s that one last hug you give before saying goodbye, or the quiet comfort you send when someone just needs to feel you’re thinking of them. Maybe it’s for a new baby, a friend going through a tough time, or someone who simply deserves a little extra warmth. Maybe, if we’re honest, it’s you who needs One More Hug.
This free crochet blanket pattern is cozy, textured, unisex, and beautifully versatile. Designed in 9 sizes from preemie to king, it’s perfect for anyone of any age—and works just as well as a stroller snuggle as it does a cozy bedspread.
The Design
This blanket is made in rows and all in one piece, and here’s the best bit: you don’t even need to add a border. The edges work up clean and neat on their own—yes, even if you’re a confident beginner.
It combines simple double crochets (US terms) with just the occasional crossed double crochet (which is much easier than it sounds!) and a fun little modified bean stitch that adds a bobbly texture—your “O” to the X stitches. Think of it as stitching hugs and kisses into every repeat.
It’s that easy, memorable kind of repeat that gets into a rhythm fast. So once you’re a few rows in, your hands take over and your brain can just enjoy the ride (and maybe a podcast or two).

The Name – Why “One More Hug?”
The name was suggested by a member of my Facebook Community group. I had problems thinking of one for this design.
One More Hug was a suggestion that I kept coming back to … this idea that each row felt like another hug stitched into the fabric. Maybe the recipient needs one more hug, or maybe the maker just isn’t done sending their love. This blanket is a gentle way of saying, “I’m always thinking about you.”
And here’s a fun little twist: want to make your blanket a little longer? Just add one more hug (repeat). It’s flexible and forgiving, just like the best handmade gifts should be.
A Little Backstory
The stitch combo for this one? Total happy accident. I was playing around with texture in the car (yes, I’m that crocheter) and this lovely pairing of stitches just fell into place.
Originally, I had only three rows of double crochets between the textures—which looked beautiful—but I decided to add a bit more spacing. It gave the textures more room to shine and reduced the overall yarn usage, especially helpful if you’re working a larger size.
Yarn + Materials used in this free crochet blanket pattern
I used Wendy With Wool Aran in the colourway Barley for my sample. It’s a warm and beautiful #4 weight yarn with little flecks of blue and purple that reveal themselves as you go—like little hidden gems in your project.

Paired with a 6mm hook, you get lovely drape without the blanket feeling too heavy. Plus, the bigger hook helps stretch your yarn stash further and avoids the stiffness some thicker blankets get.
Skill Level
This one is ideal for confident beginners. If you’ve mastered the double crochet and are ready to explore a couple of new stitches, this is a great next step. I’ve also included a step-by-step video tutorial to help guide you through the special stitches and show you how the repeat works.

Row 1: FDC 76 (48, 104, 140, 156) (182, 314, 336, 378). OR. CH 79 (51, 107, 143, 159)(185, 317, 339, 381), dc into fourth ch from hook, dc in each ch across. (76 (48, 104, 140, 156) (182, 314, 336, 378) sts).
Row 2: Turn, Ch3, dc into first st, and each st across.
Row 3: Turn, ch3, *sk1 st, dc in next st, working behind the st just made, dc into sk’d st.*. Rep from * to * across until you have 1 st remaining, dc in last st.
Row 4: Rep row 2
Row 5: Turn, ch3,* MBS in next st, ch1, sk1*. Rep from * to * across until you have 1 st remaining (note you will have just worked a ch1 and sk’d 1). DC in last st.
Row 6: Rep row 2
Row 7: Rep row 3
Rows 8-12: Rep row 2
Rows 13 onward: Rep rows 3-12 until your work measures approximately 22 (17, 35, 40, 60) (60, 108, 108, 108) “ tall.
Note: Be sure to end with a row 9 repeat to mirror the start of the blanket.
FO and weave in ends.
Edging around your blanket:
I found that I did not need to add a border to my blanket, but if you wish to I recommend a simple sc border because it will not fight with the texture of the blanket.
Turn, Ch1, SC in each st along the top of your blanket until you get to the final st of the row. [2sc, ch1, 2sc] in last st of the row.
Turn your work so that you are working down the side of your blanket, sc evenly down the side. I found that working 1 sc in each sc and 2sc in the dc rows worked well for me. In the last st of that side [2sc, ch1, 2sc] in last st of the row.
SC in each st along the bottom of your blanket until you get to the final st of the row. [2sc, ch1, 2sc] in last st of that row.
Turn your work so that you are working up the final side of your blanket, sc evenly up the side. In the last st of that side [2sc, ch1, sc] in last st of the row. SS to join.
Final Thoughts
Whether you’re sending love to someone far away or creating comfort right at home, the One More Hug Blanket is a soft, snuggly reminder that you’re never really too far for one more hug.
Now grab your hook, make a cup of something warm, and let’s get stitching.
