Learn Mosaic Crochet with This Free Cauldrons Blanket Section Pattern

If you’re joining us for the Mosaic Halloween Blanket CAL 2025, you’re in for a treat (no tricks here!). Section 9 is here, and it’s one of my favorites — a pair of bubbling cauldrons worked in mosaic crochet. When I think of Halloween, witches and potions instantly come to mind. So of course this blanket had to include a cauldron or two! Who knows what’s brewing inside them?
Growing up in the 1980s, I was often dressed as a witch for Halloween. Back then, costumes usually involved a black bin bag, half a tin of hairspray, and neon eyeshadow that could stop traffic. Those memories are exactly what inspired me to bring a little witchy magic to this blanket section.
About This Mosaic Crochet Pattern
This free mosaic crochet pattern is part of the Halloween Mosaic Blanket CAL, hosted by Jamie of Remington Lane Crochet. The cauldrons are worked using the overlay mosaic crochet technique.
Overlay mosaic crochet may look complicated, but don’t let the finished effect fool you. Once you start working the stitches, you’ll quickly see how straightforward it is. With just basic stitches, an understanding of which are the front and the back loops and simple repeats, you can create incredible detail. Just like these cauldrons bubbling away in your blanket!
Yarn and Color Choices
For my version of the cauldrons, I used two shades of Paintbox Simply Aran yarn in purple. The colors worked beautifully together and gave a bold but slightly magical finish.
Jamie’s version for the crochet along uses 3 weight (DK) yarn so is much lighter (and the section works up to be slightly smaller). She used black for the cauldrons and a vibrant green for the background, which gives a strikingly spooky Halloween vibe. Both versions show how versatile this mosaic crochet pattern can be depending on your color choices.
