Welcome back to our Tunisian Crochet Along! In this installment, we will delve into the fascinating world of the Tunisian reverse stitch (TRS), a unique and versatile stitch that adds texture and depth to your crochet projects.

The Tunisian reverse stitch, a staple in Tunisian Crochet techniques, is perfect for creating dense, warm fabrics that are both visually striking and durable. Whether you’re looking to enhance your skills or add a new stitch to your arsenal, mastering the TRS will undoubtedly elevate your Tunisian Crochet creations to the next level. Let’s get started!

The 5th stitch in our free Learn to Tunisian Crochet Blanket Crochet Along, the Tunisian Reverse Stitch (TRS), has arrived! While this stitch might feel a bit awkward at first, it becomes super easy from the second row onward. As always, this post includes written instructions, a photo tutorial, and a video tutorial all in one place!

To work the Tunisian Reverse Stitch, insert your hook into the vertical back bar from the wrong side of the fabric and pull up a loop. The last return row will tilt forward, forming little knots that resemble upside-down, backward single crochets. Crazy, right?

Don’t worry! There are written, photo AND video tutorials below. So whatever your learning preference is I have you covered!

You can use any weight yarn and an appropriately sized hook for this project, as you’ll work your foundation row until it reaches the desired length. I chose to use #4 weight (aran) yarn for my blankets because it works up quickly, I have plenty of it in my stash, and it’s a common choice among crocheters.

For the green version, I used Brava Worsted by Knit Picks, which you can find at WeCrochet here.

For the yellow version of this square, I used approximately 140 yards of Paintbox Simply Aran in shade 221.

Both yarns are machine washable and dryable, making them practical choices for blankets.

I used a 6.5mm Tunisian hook for the green version and a 6mm Tunisian hook for the yellow version. Remember, you can use whatever hook size is appropriate for the yarn you’re using.

Handy Hint: In Tunisian Crochet, it’s best to go up one or two hook sizes to ensure your drape isn’t too stiff and to reduce curling in your project.

You will also need:

Scissors

Stitch markers
