How To Do The Tunisian Half-Double Crochet Stitch
Welcome back to our Learn to Tunisian Crochet Blanket Crochet Along! Today, we’re diving into the Tunisian half double crochet stitch (THDCS), the ninth stitch in our series.
This versatile stitch is a fantastic addition to your Tunisian Crochet toolkit, offering a beautiful, close-knit texture that’s ideal for a wide range of projects.
Whether you’re crafting cozy blankets, warm tops, stylish pillow covers, or practical dishcloths, the Tunisian half double crochet stitch is a perfect choice for achieving a snug and durable finish.
One thing to keep in mind is that it can create a square that’s a bit wider than you might expect. This is because of the extra stitches added on the forward pass.
I really love the look and texture of this stitch! Pay close attention though, this stitch starts out differently than we have been doing. The foundation row is what gets you started!

You can use any weight yarn and an appropriately sized hook for this project, as you’ll work your foundation row until it reaches the desired length. I chose to use #4 weight (aran) yarn for my blankets because it works up quickly. I have plenty of it in my stash, and it’s a common choice among crocheters.
For the blue version, I used Brava Worsted by Knit Picks, which you can find at WeCrochet here.
For the camel coloured version of this square, I used approximately 160 yards of Paintbox Simply Aran.
Both yarns are machine washable and dryable, making them practical choices for blankets.
I used a 6.5mm Tunisian hook for the green version and a 6mm Tunisian hook for the yellow version. Remember, you can use whatever hook size is appropriate for the yarn you’re using.
You will also need:
Stitch markers (optional to mark first and last stitches)
WHERE TO GET THE PDF PATTERN
You can purchase the individual square pattern in any of my shops by clicking the buttons below. However, I would recommend getting the complete e-book. It contains all 12 square patterns plus the joining and border instructions for one unbelievably low price!

Foundation Row
To work the THDCS, you will work a “modified” foundation row. Yarn over before inserting your hook into each chain and pulling up a loop. This will result in a lot of loops on your hook, so make sure you give yourself enough room! You will then chain 1 for the return and pull through 3 loops. Yarn over and pull through 3 loops all the way until you only have 1 loop left on your hook.
Regular Rows
To work the next rows, you can ch1 at the beginning (also something we don’t normally do!) or you can omit that to keep the right edge a little tighter, the choice is yours. *Yo, insert hook behind the next vertical bar and the next bar that appears to be leaning away from it, yo and pull up a loop; rep from * until you reach the edge stitch: yo, insert into 2 loops of the left edge stitch, yo, pull up a loop.
The return pass is: chain 1, *Yo, pull thru 3 loops*. Rep from * to * all the way down!
For the CAL, you will need to do this for 12″ x 12″ square.
Stitch multiple: This stitch does not have a multiple. You can crochet any number of stitches until you reach the desired measurement.
ABBREVIATIONS USED:
R – reverse pass
YO – Yarn Over
THDCS – tunisian half double crochet stitch
Ch – chain
F – forward pass
Written Instructions
Chain any number of stitches until you reach 12” but do not work a normal foundation row:
Foundation Row:
F: Yo, insert hook into 2nd ch from the hook and pull up a loop, *yo, insert hook into next ch and pull up a loop; rep from * to end (you will have MANY loops on the hook).
R: Ch1, yo, pull thru 3 loops on the hook all the way down the row until you have only 1 loop left on the hook.
Row 1
F: ch1, yo, insert hook behind front bar and the stitch next to it that appears to be leaning away from the bar and pull up a loop. *Yo, insert hook behind next front bar and the stitch next to it that appears to be leaning away from it and pull up a loop. Rep from * to left edge stitch. Yo, insert hook into left edge stitch as normal and pull up a loop.
R: Ch1, *yo and pull thru 3 loops. Rep from * until there is only 1 loop left on your hook.
Rows 2 on: Repeat row 1 both F and R passes until your square measures 12”.
Bind off: You can do this with a 6.5mm regular crochet hook if you prefer. With the starting loop on your hook Yo, insert hook as we have been for the THDCS, yo, pull through all loops on the hook. You are slip stitching all the way down this row.
*Yo, insert hook as to work a THDCS, yo, pull through all loops on the hook. Repeat from * until you reach the left edge stitch. Insert hook through two loops on the left edge, yo, pull through all loops.
FO. Weave in ends.
