How To Crochet The Tunisian Full Stitch
Welcome back to our Learn to Tunisian Crochet Blanket Crochet Along! This is the fourth installment, and we’re diving into the Tunisian Full Stitch (TFS), one of the versatile and visually appealing stitches in Tunisian Crochet.
Whether you’re new to Tunisian Crochet or looking to expand your stitch repertoire, the Tunisian Full Stitch is an excellent choice for creating textured and intricate patterns.
Join us as we explore the step-by-step process of mastering the TFS, and discover how this stitch can add a unique touch to your crochet projects.
Here we are again, with another stitch: the Tunisian Full Stitch (TFS). This stitch is super quick and easy to do! It does curl at the top and bottom quite a bit, but blocking will fix this right up!
I absolutely loved crocheting this stitch—it’s incredibly fast to work up once you understand where to place your hook for the first and last stitches of each row in the two-row repeat.
I’m especially fond of its texture! The stitch is chunkier compared to some others, making it ideal for more durable projects like hotpads (stay tuned for my upcoming pattern!), mats, rugs, and more.

You can use any weight yarn and an appropriately sized hook for this project, as you’ll work your foundation row until it reaches the desired length. I chose to use #4 weight (aran) yarn for my blankets because it works up quickly, I have plenty of it in my stash, and it’s a common choice among crocheters.
For the green version, I used Brava Worsted by Knit Picks, which you can find at WeCrochet here.
For the yellow version of this square, I used approximately 140 yards of Paintbox Simply Aran in shade 221.
Both yarns are machine washable and dryable, making them practical choices for blankets.
I used a 6.5mm Tunisian hook for the green version and a 6mm Tunisian hook for the yellow version. Remember, you can use whatever hook size is appropriate for the yarn you’re using.
Handy Hint: In Tunisian Crochet, it’s best to go up one or two hook sizes to ensure your drape isn’t too stiff and to reduce curling in your project.

If you prefer I have both a right and left handed video tutorial on my Youtube Channel to help you through this stitch.
Stitch multiple: You can use any number of stitches for this one.
To work the Tunisian Full Stitch (TFS), you will insert your hook in the space between two stitches. The stitches are offset to the previous row. This stitch does not have a multiple, so you can chain any number of stitches to work the swatch with me.
I like this stitch because the ease of which to do it is actually satisfying and the texture is super pleasing to the eye.
For the Learn Tunisian Crochet crochet along, you will need to work a 12″ x 12″ square. This stitch does not have a multiple, you can simply crochet any number of stitches until you reach the desired measurement.
Complete a normal foundation row–you can find instructions for this in the Introduction to Tunisian post, here.
Written Instructions for the Tunisian Full Stitch Square
Chain any number of stitches until you reach 12” – this stitch has no stitch multiples so you can use any number of stitches to reach your 12″. As a reference using a 6mm hook and 4 weight yarn I chained 50.
Complete a foundation row as instructed in the introductory blog post here.
Row 1
Forward pass (F): Begin in the first space: insert hook in the first space and pull up a loop, *insert hook into the next space and pull up a loop; rep from * until there is one space and the left edge stitch left: sk the last space and work a left edge stitch.
Return pass (R): Normal return pass.
Row 2
F: Begin in the 2nd open space and work down the row thru the last space: insert hook into 2nd space and pull up a loop (sk the first space), *insert hook into the next sp and pull up a loop; rep from * all the way to the left edge stitch, working into the space just before the left edge stitch; complete a left edge stitch.
R: Normal return pass.
Row 3: Repeat rows 2 and 3 working both F and R passes until your square measures 12”.
Bind off: You can do this with a 6.5mm regular crochet hook if you prefer—with the starting loop on your hook: insert hook as we have been for the TFS, yo, pull through all loops on the hook. You are slip stitching all the way down this row.
Insert hook as to work a TFS, yo, pull through all loops on the hook. Repeat this process until you reach the left edge stitch: insert hook through two loops on the left edge, yo, pull through all loops. FO. Weave in ends.
