Free Crochet Beanie Pattern for Winter – Twin Pops Beanie in 3 Sizes

Free Crochet Beanie Pattern for Winter – Twin Pops Beanie in 3 Sizes
Spread the love

If you’ve been hunting for a crochet beanie pattern that’s warm, textured, and fun to stitch, you’re in the right cozy corner of the internet. The Twin Pops Beanie is my newest design, and she’s a beauty. Worked bottom-up, featuring paired popcorn stitches that climb up the hat in neat little duos, this design is as stylish as it is snug.

And the best part? It looks brilliant whether you go for one colour or a bold two-colour combo. This is your permission slip to play with your stash.

The Twin Pops Beanie is part of the From Us to You event — my 2025 hat-and-scarf extravaganza with SandraStitches. Each month we bring you a free pattern duo inspired by a new stitch and a new colour theme. Think of it as a year-long yarn party with monthly gifts that never expire. All featured patterns are forever free on our blogs!

So grab your yarn (I used Paintbox Simply Aran because of course I did) and let’s make a beautifully textured hat that’s as warm as your favourite winter jumper.

Why I Designed the Twin Pops Beanie

Popcorn stitches are basically little crocheted hugs — squishy, warm, full of texture. They’re perfect for adult hats, especially when you pair them up and let them march up the fabric like tiny yarn soldiers.

But you might notice something: this pattern is only written in three adult sizes.

Yep. I made the decision not to include baby or child sizes — and trust me, it wasn’t because I didn’t want to. But I had some practicalities to work through. As adorable as popcorn stitches are, they’re also:

  • A tad firm for delicate baby heads
  • Rather… visually bold on tiny hats (imagine tiny humans with giant popcorns—cute, but possibly questionable)

So I stuck with what works beautifully: Adult Small, Adult Medium, and Adult Large. Popcorn perfection.

Don’t worry — I have plenty of little-human-friendly hat patterns available on the blog if you’re stitching for kids or babies.

Other patterns you may like (that include child sizes)

  • The Hive Beanie is written in all of the sizes from newborn to adult large. And the texture on it is just gorgeous!
  • The Diamond in the Rough Beanie also comes in 8 sizes from newborn to adult large. It is worked top down and is a quick make.
  • Another great unisex hat for all of the family is the Gentle Kisses Beanie which is worked top down and has lots of wonderful texture.
  • If you are looking for something with some simple texture then the Houndstooth Family Hat may be right up your alley.

About the Yarn

For this crochet beanie pattern, I reached for one of my long-time favourites: Paintbox Simply Aran. If you’ve been around here for more than five minutes, you already know I have a soft spot for this yarn. It’s affordable, dependable, and comes in a ridiculous range of colours — from soft, gentle neutrals to the boldest brights you can imagine. Whatever mood you’re in, there’s a Paintbox shade for it.

It’s also 100% acrylic, which means it’s soft, warm, easy to care for, and wearable for most people — even those who are sensitive to wool. No itch, no fuss, just cozy goodness.

For the Twin Pops Beanie, I paired it with a 4mm hook (yes, one size down from the usual Aran / #4 weight recommendation). This keeps the fabric a little denser and adds that extra touch of warmth — perfect for a hat that’s meant to stand up to chilly weather. Warmth, colour, comfort… this yarn ticks all the boxes.

Special Stitches

Foundation Single Crochet: You can find my tutorial on the foundation stitches (you will find the sc at about 23 mins into the videos): For right handed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPHOG4VIi_Q&t=109s Left handed – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqkTFzCja-A I find this has a more aesthetically pleasing finish than the chain starts to projects and it gives the project more movement.

Back loop only: The photo below shows you which loop is the back loop. You will work your stitch into only this loop and not the usual front and back loops.

Hdc into the Third Loop (Camel Stitch): To work this stitch you will create a normal hdc stitch but you will be working into the third loop and not the front or back loops. The photo below shows you where the third loop will be.

You can find my video for this stitch at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUuktGH7tmw

Half double crochet 2 together: YO, insert hook into indicated st, YO and pull through, YO and insert hook into next st, YO and pull through, YO and pull through all 5 loops on hook. This counts as 1 stitch.

Double crochet 2 together: YO, insert hook into indicated st, YO and pull through2 loops on hook, YO and insert hook into next st, YO and pull through 2 loops on hook, YO and pull through all 4 loops on hook. This counts as 1 stitch.

Popcorn Stitch: Work 5 dc into the indicated st, remove the yarn from your hook and insert the hook from the front to the back of both the front and back loops of the first dc, attach the loop you remove back on your hook and ss it through the first st. Note, we do not ch1 to close the popcorn stitch for this particular pattern.

Sandra from SandraStitches has a video tutorial for this stitch which you can find here.

Pattern Notes

  • Written in US terms
  • Ch1 sts at the start of a row do not count as a st unless otherwise stated.
  • Your slip stitches to join never count as a stitch.
  • This crochet beanie pattern is worked bottom up.
  • Turn only when the pattern tells you to.
  • Where pattern is different per size this will be shown as teen / adult small (adult medium, adult large).
  • Stitch counts are given at the end of each row. Note that when it comes to reducing the crown, if you are a couple of stitches off the count don’t worry too much about it.
  • If you find that the body of your hat is wider than the brim it means that your gauge was off. However, there is an easier fix that frogging the whole hat – adjust the amount of stitches you work at round 1 for your size by the stitch multiple below. You should be able to tell if this is needed by the number of rows you worked for your brim. For example, you worked 70 sc blo rows for the brim. Working 104 stitches evenly around at round 1 would create a hat body that is wider than the brim by quite a way. Here I would recommend adjusting your stitch count to 80 to accommodate your gauge (multiple of 8). If you do this be aware that the stitch counts for the rest of your hat will not match my pattern.
  • Stitch multiple for this design is 8.
  • Please read the pattern and ensure you are comfortable with it before starting your project.
  • When measuring the length of your hat when working the main body, you do so from the bottom of the brim up
  • The brim is designed to be wide and folded over (so it will be twice as long as intended for the fold).
  • Feel free to play with colours when making your hat. For my plum and cream version I changed colour as I started Round 3 of the hat .

To make the band:

Row 1:  FSC 28 (28, 28) OR

CH29 (29, 29), SC in second CH from hook and each CH across. (28, (28, 28) sts)

Row 2:  Turn, Ch1, SC BLO in first st and each st across.

NOTE: the ch1 at the start of this row can be optional. If you like a straighter edge to your brim do not work the CH1.

(28, (28, 28) sts)

Rows 3 onwards:   Repeat row 2 until your band measures 20, (21.5, 22)” slightly stretched.

Joining your ends – Ch1, grab the starting end of the band (first row done), and line it up to match the final row of the band.  Sew the ends together with a SS join in each stitch.

You are now working in the round and with the right side of the hat facing you.

To make the main body of the hat:

Round 1: CH1, work 96 (104, 112) HDC sts evenly around the top of the brim. SS to the top of the first HDC of the round to join. (96 (104, 112) sts)

Round 2: Ch1, hdc into the third loop of the first and each st around. SS to top of first stitch of the round to join. (96 (104, 112) sts)

Round 3: CH1, DC in first 5 sts, *sk 1 st, [PS, ch1, PS] in next st, sk next st^, DC in next 5 sts*. Rep from * to * around. Note, you will end the final repeat at ^. SS to top of first DC to join. (96 (104, 112) sts)

Round 4: CH1, SC in first 5 sts, *ch1, sk the next PS, 2 SC in CH1 sp, CH1, sk next PS ^ sc in each of the next 5 DC from the previous round*. Rep from * to * around. Note you will end the repeat at ^. SS to the top of the first SC to join. (108 (117, 128) sts)

Round 5: CH1, DC in first 5 sts, *sk 1 st, PS in next st, ch1, PS in next st,[ sk next st^, DC in next 5 sts*. Rep from * to * around. Note, you will end the final repeat at ^. SS to top of first DC to join. (96 (102, 112) sts)

Rounds 6 onwards: Rep rows 4 and 5 until work measures 13 (13.5, 14)” tall (or as tall as desired) from the bottom of the brim to the top of your last row. End with a repeat of row 5.

Now we will be reducing the stitch count around the crown / top of your hat. This will add approx. 2” to the height of your hat.

Note: do not worry too much about your stitch counts on these rounds, as long as you are within a couple of stitches indicated your hat will still look great!

Round 7: With right side facing you, CH1, sc2tog across first 2 sts, *sc in next 3 sts, CH1, skip the next PS, 2sc in CH1 sp, CH1, sk next PS^,  sc2tog across next 2 sts* Rep from * to * around, ending the final repeat at ^.  SS to top of first sc2tog to join.  (84 (88, 96) sts)

Round 8: Ch1, *DC2tog, DC in next 2 sts*. Rep from * to * around. SS to top of first DC2tog to join.

Note, for size Medium you will have an extra stitch. DC2tog over the last 2 sts of the round. (63 (66, 72) sts)

Round 9: Ch1, *DC2tog, DC in next st*. Rep from * to * around. SS to top of first DC2tog to join.

Note, for size Medium you will have an extra stitch. DC2tog over the last 2 sts of the round. (42 (44, 48) sts)

Round 10: CH1, DC2tog around. SS to top of first DC2tog to join. (21 (22, 24) sts)

Round 11: CH1, DC2tog around. SS to top of first DC2tog to join (11 (11, 12)

FO leaving a long tail. Use the tail to stitch around the FLO (See photo showing front and back loops in special stitches) of each stitch at the top of the hat. Pull tight to close. Weave in ends.
