Spread the love

Are you looking for a crochet beanie pattern free of charge that’s stylish, textured, and perfect for all ages? The Diamond in the Rough Beanie is here to check all the boxes! Designed for both men and women, this cozy beanie features modern granny stitch detailing, a snug, solid crown, and a stretchy ribbed brim. Plus, it’s available in eight sizes, from newborn to adult large!

This pattern was created as part of the From Us to You event—a crochet donation challenge with myself and SandraStitches aimed at sharing patterns that keep you warm while spreading kindness. I’m thrilled to offer this design as part of the event, and I hope you love making it as much as I did!

The Stitch Behind the Texture

The modern granny stitch is the star of this beanie, creating the beautiful unisex, textured detail around the body of the hat. If you’re new to this stitch, don’t worry! I’ve got you covered with a step-by-step blog post featuring photo tutorials, plus video tutorials for both left- and right-handed crocheters. This stitch works up quickly and adds just the right amount of visual interest without being overly complicated.

Find the full tutorial here.

Choosing the Right Yarn

This beanie is designed using #4 weight yarn, which makes it warm yet lightweight. For my versions, I used Paintbox Simply Aran, a soft and durable 100% acrylic yarn that holds up beautifully over time. But don’t worry if you have a different worsted-weight yarn in your stash—this pattern is versatile and works well with any #4 weight yarn.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Yardage: 55 – 190 yards, depending on the size
  • Fiber Options: Acrylic, wool, cotton, or blends—just be careful with wool as it can cause allergies.
  • Recommended Hook Size: 5mm (H) crochet hook (adjust as needed for gauge)

Why You’ll Love This Beanie

✔ Unisex Design: Perfect for everyone in the family!
✔ Quick to Crochet: The stitch pattern works up fast, making it a great last-minute gift.
✔ Top-Down Construction: No seaming required—just keep crocheting in rounds!
✔ Customizable: Looks amazing in solid colors, stripes, or even a gradient effect.
✔ Cozy & Warm: The solid crown ensures warmth, while the front post/back post ribbing adds a snug fit around the brim.
