Crochet the Open Wave Stitch with Ease (Video + Photo Tutorial)

If you’re looking to branch out from the basics and dip your toes into something that looks fancy but is actually totally doable – say hello to the Open Wave Stitch!
This Open Wave Stitch crochet tutorial will walk you through everything you need to know about this gorgeous, lacy-textured stitch that creates those stunning, wavy ridges you’ll want to run your fingers over again and again. It’s the kind of stitch that looks like you really know your stuff (even if you’re just sneaking out of beginner territory – we won’t tell).
I have both photo and video tutorials below for you to work from so you can choose whichever method works best for you!

Why You’ll Love the Open Wave Stitch
Here’s the thing about the Open Wave Stitch – it’s just the right mix of “ooh, that looks fancy!” and “hey, I can actually do that!”
- ✔️ Confident beginner-friendly – If you’ve already met the usual suspects (chains, single crochet, half double, double, and treble crochet), you’re ready for this stitch.
- ✔️ Lush texture – Those wavy ridges? Chef’s kiss. The slight use of back loop only work makes it beautifully dimensional.
- ✔️ Almost lace-like – Light, airy, but still cozy enough to give your project substance.
- ✔️ Looks professional – You’ll get all the “Did you make that?” questions – and you can reply, “Of course I did,” with a knowing smile.
What Projects is the Open Wave Stitch Perfect For?
Honestly? Just about anything where you want a soft, open texture with a bit of flair. Some favorite ways to use this stitch:
- Lightweight scarves, shawls, and cowls
- Beautiful open blankets for warmer months
- Summery beach bags or market totes
- Delicate wraps and ponchos
- Stylish table runners or placemats
Whether you’re creating something cozy for cool evenings or something breezy for beachy days, this stitch flexes to fit the vibe.
