Crochet Cables Made Easy: Sunlit Clearing Blanket Section Free Pattern
Spread the love

Welcome back to the Adventure in Cables Blanket Crochet Along! If you’ve been following along since Part 1, you’ll know we’re exploring beautiful cable stitches together, one section at a time, to create a textured and cozy blanket you’ll treasure for years to come.

Learn to crochet easy cables! This is a photo of two possible blankets that you can make during this free crochet along to create the perfect crochet blanket.

Today we’re diving into Part 2: Sunlit Clearing – a section that balances simplicity with texture. This design features two sets of cable stitches running up the length of the blanket. Every so often, the cables twist to create extra visual interest, giving the piece movement and depth without being overly complicated.

Whether this is your very first time trying cables or you’re already comfortable with them, this section is a great chance to practice easy crochet cables while still making real progress on your blanket.

About the Crochet Along

The Adventure in Cables Crochet Along (CAL) is a free, step-by-step blanket project where we’re building the blanket one section at a time. Each new part introduces you to a cable stitch pattern that will keep things interesting without overwhelming you.

  • Pattern releases happen weekly for 6 weeks – 2 sections each Monday and Thursday..
  • Step-by-step support is available in my blog posts and video tutorials.
  • The blanket is built section by section, so you can work at your own pace.

If you missed Part 1, don’t worry – you can find it here. Or visit the round-up post to check out the other option for part 1.

Paid eBook Option

Prefer everything neatly packaged together?

I’ve also put together a complete, ad-free eBook that includes:

  • All blanket sections (released as the CAL progresses).
  • Step-by-step written instructions.
  • Helpful stitch explanations and photos.
  • A printer-friendly layout.

This option is perfect if you’d rather not wait for each section to release, or if you prefer having the full pattern available offline. You can grab the eBook here.

Part 2: Sunlit Clearing – Easy Crochet Cables

The Sunlit Clearing section focuses on easy crochet cables that give stunning results with minimal effort. The two mirrored sets of cables create vertical lines of texture that twist occasionally, almost like tree branches reaching up toward the light (hence the name!).

This part works up fairly quickly and is designed to flow smoothly from the stitches you learned in Part 1. It’s a perfect step if you’re still building confidence with cables but want to see a more advanced effect in your blanket.

What you’ll practice in this section:

  • Working with post stitches to create cables.
  • Keeping cables evenly spaced for a balanced design.
  • Adding subtle twists for visual interest.

By the end of this 4″ wide section, you’ll have a blanket piece that feels sophisticated while still being beginner-friendly.

Materials

For consistency, you’ll use the same hook and ideally the same or a comparable yarn from Part 1.

For my version, I used Rowan Pure Wool Superwash Worsted and this section was made in the shade Gold. It is 100% pure wool and so was more expensive than what I usually use, but I knew it would be perfect for this project! And the gold shade really makes those cables pop.

Our versions are worked in 4 weight yarn with a 5mm hook.

Step-by-Step Video Tutorials

Cables don’t have to be complicated! To make the Sunlit Clearing section as approachable as possible, I’ve put together step-by-step video tutorials for both left-handed and right-handed crocheters.

These videos will walk you through the stitches and cable twists from start to finish, so you can follow along at your own pace and feel confident as you crochet this part of the blanket. After all, we are aiming for this section to feel like easy crochet cables!

Pattern notes:

  • Written in US terms.
  • Ch1 start does not count as a st
  • You work the repeat for this vertical blanket section until it is 60″ long or as long as desired.
  • Be sure not to work your cable stitches too tight as it will pull and warp your project!
  • This section will be approx. 4” wide.
  • Cable is worked over 8 sts.
  • When working FPdc or FPtc you will work into the stitch two rows below.
  • Straight cable sections use FPdc. Crossed cable sections use FPtr.
  • Every even numbered row is an easy sc across row – there are no FP sts to worry about.
  • After Row 3 you will work FPdc or FPtc sts only into FPDC or FPtc sts from the row 2 rows below.
  • When working a Front Post stitch this will count as a st against your current row. So for example, ‘SC in the first st, FPdc around next st’ – this FPdc counts as a st so you miss one stitch from the sc row below before working the next sc.
  • Odd numbered rows are right side rows, even numbered rows are wrong side rows.

Difficulty: Adv Beg/Intermediate – Uses a combination of post stitches that change from row to row, to create the twists.

Special stitches

Special Stitches:

  • FPdc (Front Post double crochet) – yo, insert hook from front to back to front around post of indicated st, yo, pull up loop, [yo, pull through 2 loops] 2 times.
  • FPtr (Front Post treble) – yo 2 times, insert hook from front to back to front around st indicated, yo, pull up loop, [yo, pull through 2 loops] 3 times.
  • FSC (foundation single crochet) – This is an alternative to the chain start. I have both left and right handed video tutorials on how to do this on YouTube:
