How To Crochet The Tunisian Purl Stitch

How To Crochet The Tunisian Purl Stitch
Spread the love

Welcome back!  Today’s tutorial is about the Tunisian Purl Stitch!  This stitch is worked by yarning under or in front of your hook.  You will need to hold on to the yarn while you insert your hook into the bar, then release it so you can yarn over and pull up a loop.  Sounds tricky, I know, but once you see how it’s done, it’s easy peasy!

Working the Tunisian Purl Stitch (TPS)

Tunisian Purl Stitches (TPS) are crocheted with the working yarn in front.  Insert the hook from right to left in the front bar and pull up a loop.  Repeat with each stitch across, completing a normal edge stitch (see the introductory post here), and finally, completing a normal return pass (also explained in the introductory post).

I used:

Worsted/Aran/#4 weight yarn–Brava Worsted by Knit Picks in Cornflower, Tidepool, Alfalfa, and mint.  I was able to get 2 squares out of each skein. As there are 12 squares, if you are using the same yarn, you will need 3 of each.  I also used Brava Worsted Speckle in Tidal for borders and joining.

You can find Brava Worsted at WeCrochet

Written Instructions

Foundation Row: Complete a normal foundation row as explained in the Introduction to Tunisian Post here.  There is no stitch multiple for this stitch, so you can do as many as you like however, I recommend doing a 4″ x 4″ swatch to learn the stitch.

Row 1, Forward Pass: In the video, I explain to “scoop up” the working yarn so that it is in front of your hook and hold it in place; insert hook thru first vertical bar, release the working yarn, yarn over (normally) and pull up a loop; first stitch made.  Complete the instructions you just read for each stitch down the row.  Work a normal edge stitch by inserting your hook (without doing a forward yarn under) catching 2 loops of the edge stitch and yarn over to pull up a loop.

Row 1, Return Pass: Chain 1, *yarn over and pull thru 2 loops; repeat from * to the last stitch, there will be one loop left on your hook.

Row 2, Forward and Return Passes: complete instructions for row 1 both passes until your work measures the desired measurement.

For the CAL

You simply need to do a 12″ x 12″ square.  You can stretch it a bit to meet that measurement, since it’s going to curl quite a bit, but will straighten out with the blocking process.
